Designer Spotlight
Sister Mary Corita Kent
![]() let all the world keep holiday | ![]() that they may have life | ![]() handle with care |
For this semester’s last spotlight, we have Corita Kent! Corita was an artist, designer, educator, and advocate for social justice. In her beginnings, she entered the religious order Immaculate Heart of Mary, eventually teaching and then heading the art department at Immaculate Heart College.
Corita’s work focused on the methods of printmaking, specifically serigraphy, otherwise known as silk screen printing. And while her work feels more like art, throughout her career, she has been commissioned for billboards, banners, posters, and even for the Boston Gas Company gas tank design. During her career, her work evolved from using figurative and religious imagery to incorporating advertising images and slogans, popular song lyrics, biblical verses, and literature. Her work was also political, urging people to consider the strife of poverty, war, racism, and social injustices in the world.

Happy Holidays, and enjoy your winter break!
See you next year!
